St. John’s falls to Gonzaga, 86-71

The St. John’s Red Storm saw their dream season come to an end in an 86-71 loss to the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

The Red Storm was a popular pick to go deep into the tournament, but the loss of D.J. Kennedy was just too much to overcome.

Without their leading rebounder and third scoring option, St. John’s was bothered by the size of Gonzaga.

St. John’s trailed by 11 at halftime and never really threatened to crawl their way back into the game. (Read More…)

By Bud L. Ellis

For the first time in eight years, the St. John’s Red Storm made the NCAA tournament. Their stay ended about eight minutes into their opening game against Gonzaga on Thursday.

The Bulldogs dominated from the get-go, racing to an 11-point halftime lead and never looking back in ending the Red Storm’s season 86-71 in the Southeast region in Denver. (Read More…)

St. John’s loses Kennedy for season

The St. John’s Red Storm suffered a tough loss at the hands of Syracuse, but it certainly wasn’t as heart-wrenching as the injury to senior D.J. Kennedy.

The team found out after the game that Kennedy tore his ACL and is out for the rest of the season.

He is the team’s third-leading scorer and a key piece of a group that was hoping to make a lot of noise in the NCAA tournament.

Kennedy was injured in the first half when he came down awkwardly after going up for an offensive rebound. (Read More…)

St. John’s slips past Rutgers, 65-63

The St. John’s Red Storm slipped past the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 65-63, thanks to some bizarre officiating.

St. John’s got away with what appeared to be a couple of fouls in the final moments, but that wasn’t even close to the worst of it.

Justin Brownlee stole a pass, took several steps without dribbling, stepped out of bounds and then threw the ball to the ceiling all while the clock continued to run.

The officials allowed the clock to run out when a travel and/or out-of-bounds call should have stopped it. (Read More…)

Red Storm hopes to rise to challenge in Big East tourney

By Bud L. Ellis

The Big East Conference is full of teams that are flying high on the national radar. Count the St. John’s Red Storm as one of those squads.

The Red Storm finished the regular season in a three-way tie for third place in the Big East with Syracuse and Louisville, no small feat considering eight of the teams in the conference are ranked in the top 19 in the nation. (Read More…)

St. John’s rolls past Villanova, 81-68

The St. John’s Red Storm kept rolling right along with an impressive 81-68 victory over the host Villanova Wildcats.

Dwight Hardy had himself a day, scoring 34 points to lead the Johnnies. Four of their five starters scored in double figures.

Give St. John’s a lot of credit for the job they did on the defensive end in holding Corey Fisher to just two points.

The held Villanova to just 40 percent shooting from the field and only 31 percent from behind the three-point arc. (Read More…)

St. John’s upsets Duke, 93-78

The St. John’s Red Storm stepped out of Big East play and took down the ACC’s top team with a 93-78 win over the Duke Blue Devils.

The Red Storm took the lead from the opening tip and never looked back, building a 21-point advantage by halftime.

For St. John’s, playing another highly ranked team was just par for the course after an unbelievably challenging stretch in January.

With a less than impressive Big East record, the win over Duke could do wonders for their NCAA tournament hopes. (Read More…)

St. John’s no match for Syracuse, 76-59

The St. John’s Red Storm fell well short in their upset bid against the Syracuse Orange, falling 76-59.

For new head coach Steve Lavin, it was his first game with the Red Storm facing the vaunted Syracuse 2-3 zone.

St. John’s shot just 36.8 percent from the field, and that isn’t going to beat one of the top teams in the country.

Lavin praised Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim after the game, saying there was a reason he was an assistant on Team USA. (Read More…)

Keady joins Lavin’s staff

New head coach Steve Lavin has lured an old coaching legend out of retirement and back into college basketball.

Gene Keady, the former Purdue head coach, is joining Lavin’s staff as a special assistant/adviser.

Lavin’s first coaching job was as a graduate assistant under Keady at Purdue, so he has a soft spot for the coach.

Keady is expected to work with the staff in developing strategies, breaking down game film and helping in practice. (Read More…)

Lavin excited to be at St. John’s

St. John’s head coach Steve Lavin said he is excited to be at the school and has been working overtime to settle into his new job.

Lavin, a West Coast guy, was thrilled to have the opportunity to move to New York and coach a school with the tradition of St. John’s.

He has gone out and made sure to hire assistants with ties to the New York City area to make progress in keeping players home.

The coach believes the time he spent away from college coaching the past several years with help him in his new position.

It gave him a chance to step back away from the game and to see college basketball from a different vantage point.
